Michigan Department of Corrections Van Involved in Auto Accident

In Ionia, Michigan, police say that a head on auto accident occurred on the corner of West Main and Wall Streets by the entrance to the Michigan Reformatory. Sources report that the accident involved a prisoner transport van for the Michigan Department of Corrections which was driven by employee Mike Thompson. The other vehicle involved was a sedan that was driven by Dillon Youngstrom.

Witnesses who saw the car accident told police that Youngstrom was traveling westbound when he attempted to turn to access the drive to the Michigan Reformatory before entering the direct path of the van which was also traveling westbound. The van crashed into Youngstrom's side door.

Youngstrom became trapped in his vehicle and had to be extracted with the "Jaws of Life". He was then taken to Spectrum Hospital for medical treatment.

Police say that there were 12 prisoners in the van and they were transported from the scene of the crash to the Michigan Department of Corrections where they were checked for injuries.
