On October 28th, Thomas Dells, of Rockford, Michigan allegedly used duct tape as a means of securing a trailer to his van. It is reported that he was using the trailer to haul items from a home. As he was driving on 10 Mile Road NE, east of Myers Lake Avenue in Courtland Township, the trailer allegedly came loose from the van and became airborne, flew over a car driving behind Dells and hit the windshield of a vehicle driven by 46-year-old Toni Hall, killing her. Also in that vehicle was Debra Carter who allegedly sustained brain and nerve damage.
Mr. Dells previously pled no contest to a charge of negligent homicide, an offense punishable by up to two years in jail. Today, Kent County Circuit Judge Donald Johnston sentenced Mr Dells to up to 4 1/2 months in jail.
