Recent Study Shows Insurance Rates Increase In Response To Tickets

The vast majority of licensed drivers have received at least one moving violation during their lifetime. But did you know that, according to a recent study commissioned by insurancequotes.com, one traffic moving violation can raise your car insurance rate by as much as 93%? The national study was actually designed to compare the average insurance premium increase for one moving violation in seven (7) different categories:

  • Careless Driving.
  • Driving in a Carpool Lane.
  • DUI.
  • Reckless Driving.
  • Failure to Stop.
  • Failure to Yield to Pedestrians.
  • Speeding.

Here is a brief snapshot of some of the shocking increases they found:

Seatbelt Violation: 5% Increase

Not Signaling: 19% Increase

Failure to Yield for Pedestrian: 19% Increase

Speeding 1-15 MPH Over the Limit: 21% Increase

DUI: 93%

The methodology of the study included assessment of data (accumulated by Quadrant Information Services) and calculated the impact of 17 types of moving violations in all 50 states (including Washington D.C.). The data was accumulated from all "garageable ZIP codes" in every U.S. state and 60-70% of the carrier market share in each state. Here is a link to an article further describing the methodology and results of the study:

Bottom line? A moving violation doesn't just hit you in the pocket book based solely upon a fine from the court. The real consequence of a ticket comes from the points associated with that moving violation. If allowed to abstract onto your master driving record, those points become visible to your insurance carrier and dramatic increases to your insurance premiums are sure to follow.
