Young Girl Attacked By Pit Bull

Last week it was reported that a 6-year-old Rochester Hills girl had to be hospitalized after she was attacked by the family'spit bull. News reports indicated that she was bitten on her face and thigh but the full extent of her injuries are unknown. Apparently the family had recently adopted the dog from an animal shelter.

The purpose of sharing this story is to highlight the unpredictability of dogs and the severe injuries that can be caused by dogs, especially pit bulls with their massive jaws. Because of this unpredictability, it is the responsibility of dog owners to take strict precautions to keep their dogs from biting others. Furthermore, all dog owners should carry homeowner's or renter's insurance to compensate for injuries caused to others in the event that their dog attacks another person.

Michigan is a strict liability state in regards to dog bites, meaning a dog is not allowed "one free bite" as in some other states. No matter whether the dog has shown aggressive behavior in the past or if it has already bitten someone before, the dog owner may be held liable for the victim's injuries.
