According to http://fenton.patch.com/articles/fenton-police-surprise-retail-fraud-suspects-with-overnight-lock-up the Fenton Police Department has a holding cell and they aren't afraid to use it. According to the article, it is the policy of the Fenton PD to send an officer to the site of a reported shoplifting, also known as retail fraud, bring them back to the station for booking where they are often held in the holding cell overnight. Wow. Our clients are typically booked, issued a citation and then sent on their way.
While the policy may seem harsh, the Fenton Police Chief, Rick Aro, seems to think the policy has a deterrent effect citing a recent decrease in retail fraud at the Fenton Wal-Mart. According to the article, the Wal-Mart is the most popular place for shoplifting followed by the grocery store VG's.
In addition to holding shoplifters, the Fenton Police Department also uses its holding cell to hold assaultive crime suspects, drunk drivers and those charged with felonies, who also have the opportunity to post bond.
