2 Kids Die In Car-Train Collision

It is being reported out of Ontario, Canada that there was a car-train collision yesterday morning. Details are sketchy but an online article indicates that a van was driving south on Strong Road in Lakeshore when the van hit the train. Five people were in the car, one man and four children. Two of the kids died. The remaining inhabitants were taken to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries.

As indicated, it is unclear exactly how the collision occurred, whether the van was hit as it was attempting to cross a road, whether it sideswiped the train or whether it simply ran into the train as the train was crossing the intersection. However it occurred, it would appear that the collision was caused by driver negligence. Trains travel on a fixed route; they cannot make sudden turns or sudden stops therefore drivers must always defer to trains. Every year we hear stories about cars trying to beat an oncoming train through an intersection. Sometimes the car makes it. When it doesn't, the outcome is always horrific. Take extra precautions, give trains a wide berth and even when it appears that a train is slow moving and far away, never try to beat it. The inconvenience of a few minutes' delay is well worth protecting your life and the lives of your passengers.
