A federally funded drunk driving crackdown is underway through Sunday which includes increased police presence in 26 Counties. Included in this crackdown – talking urinal cakes. The urinal deodorizer cakes use a recording of a woman's voice to remind those using the urinals to call a friend or a cab if they've had too much to drink. The recording reportedly says:

"Listen up. That's right, I'm talking to you. Had a few drinks? Maybe a few too many? The do yourself and everyone else a favor: Call a sober friend or a cab. Oh, and don't forget to wash your hands."

400 of the cakes have been distributed to Michigan Licensed Beverage Association in Wayne County, including Detroit, as well as Bay, Ottawa and Delta counties. The urinal cakes are being used to get people's attention, get people talking and hopefully bring home the message of safe driving. But will it really? I'm skeptical. A urinal cake that could measure alcohol content and then warn when the user is above the legal limit – now that may be worthwhile. These motion activated urinal cakes sound more like a novelty item than an effective drunk driving deterrent.
