Talk to An Attorney
You have enough to think about with your traffic citation in hand or a pending criminal matter in front of you. The last thing you need to worry about is which court will oversee your case. When you’re in Sterling Heights, it is the 41-A District Court that will hear your case. The Sterling Heights attorneys at Freedman Law Group have extensive experience representing clients in the Oakland and Macomb County areas. We are able to assist with a variety of matters, including both traffic and criminal cases.
The 41-A District Court oversees several municipalities in Macomb County, which includes the cities of Sterling Heights and Utica and the Townships of Shelby and Macomb. As a district court in Michigan, it handles most traffic violations, civil disputes seeking money damages up to $25,000, landlord-tenant disputes, and criminal cases in which the defendant is charged with a misdemeanor that is punishable by not more than one year's imprisonment. There are four judges who hear cases at two courthouse locations in Sterling Heights and Shelby Township. The Sterling Heights courthouse is located at 40111 Dodge Park Rd., Sterling Heights, MI 48313.
Within the courthouse, there are separate divisions that hear cases:
The Criminal Division of the 41-A District Court handles misdemeanor offenses and the early stages of felony cases. The court conducts arraignments, addresses bond and bail, and holds preliminary examinations in felony cases. A felony case may later move to the Macomb County Circuit Court if the court binds the case over for further proceedings.
A criminal case can begin in several ways. Depending on the circumstances, a person may be arrested, receive a citation or appearance ticket, or have a warrant issued. Michigan courts also recognize several ways to begin a misdemeanor case, including a citation, a sworn complaint with a summons or warrant, and other procedures authorized by law.
The Sterling Heights attorneys at Freedman Law Group can help you understand what to expect at each stage and what options may be available in your case.
A traffic stop does not always lead to the same type of court case. The 41-A District Court's Traffic Division handles civil infractions and parking violations. Some driving offenses, however, can lead to misdemeanor or felony charges and fall under the court's Criminal Division.
The Sterling Heights lawyers at Freedman Law Group handle traffic and driving cases involving charges such as:
If you are facing criminal charges in Sterling Heights, the 41-A District Court will be where your case begins. Freedman Law Group represents clients facing criminal allegations in this court and handles a range of charges, from OWI/DUI and traffic offenses to a variety of other misdemeanors. The firm takes the time to understand the facts, charges, and evidence involved in each case.
Lower-level criminal crimes are called misdemeanors. If convicted, they are generally punishable by jail time and/or a fine. Misdemeanors can also include a variety of traffic offenses. We represent clients in District Court who are facing misdemeanor charges with a penalty of up to one year in jail. Unique to Michigan, you may be facing a high court misdemeanor. These criminal charges may come with up to two years in jail if convicted.
If you have recently been arrested and charged with an OWI or DUI, your case will be heard in District Court. Facing OWI charges may affect a person’s license, record, employment, professional standing, insurance, and future exposure if another case ever occurs. Our Sterling Heights lawyers work with clients to protect their future.
Even a minor drug possession or other drug-related misdemeanor crime can have a lasting impact on your personal and professional life. It’s important you work with a law firm that has the experience to know how to create an effective defense.
If you are facing a theft or property crime, the team at Freedman Law Group may be able to assist. We work with clients who are facing retail fraud, shoplifting, larceny, theft, auto theft, or embezzlement criminal charges.
Facing a traffic ticket or criminal court case is going to impact more than your immediate future. Right now, you are probably focused on hearings, court dates, and paperwork. However, there’s so much more beyond the immediate. A criminal conviction can follow you long into your future, impacting potential job opportunities and housing availability. A traffic citation could directly impact your ability to drive. A license suspension or revocation could mean you no longer have the independence to drive to work. Civil matters could impact you financially.
Having legal representation is essential for fully understanding the potential long-term impacts of the case you are in. When you hire an attorney early in your case, you give them the opportunity to review the allegations, gather evidence, and consider potential defense options. At Freedman Law Group, our Sterling Heights attorneys understand that our clients may be facing a court case for the first time in their life.
